Finland holds the Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) when it meets in Geneva from 28 May to 22 June 2012. The Presidency is the second for Finland; the previous time Finland held the Presidency of the Conference was in 2002.
Although the Conference has not been able to agree on a mandate for negotiations, substance discussions on core issues (nuclear disarmament and the prevention of nuclear war, prohibition of the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons, prevention of an arms race in space, security assurances for non-nuclear States) as well as discussion on development of the Conference will take place at the five plenary sessions to be held during the Finnish Presidency.
Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja will address the Conference on Disarmament at its session on 19 June, which at the same time in practice brings the Finnish Presidency to a close.
Ambassador Kari Kahiluoto, who served as Finland’s Ambassador for disarmament in Geneva in 2005–2008, will act as Chairman during the Finnish Presidency.
